Career in Dairy Farming Career Scope In Dairy Tech

Career Scope In Dairy Tech

Career in Dairy Farming

India is the largest milk producer and the second largest milk products producer in the world. There is, therefore, plenty of opportunity in dairy farming careers in the country.

Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate course applicants require a minimum 10+2 Science with Chemistry, Physics,

Mathematics, Biology and English and with a minimum aggregate of 55 %. Selection is on

the basis of an All India Entrance Examination.

The B.Sc / B.Tech (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) are four year program after 10+2; the Dairy Diploma course of two years duration is for lower level technical positions.

After graduating in dairying, candidates can opt for further studies and specialization

through a Master program in Dairying, or related areas such as genetics and breeding,

livestock production, animal biotechnology, food technology, and preservation.

Career Prospects

The two main areas of activity in the Dairy Industry include

a) Production, which begins with the most important task of all, i.e. obtaining milk, and also

the breeding of high yielding cattle and taking care of the animals. Veterinary Scientists are

usually best suited for such jobs.

They are appointed as Procurement Officers and have to visit villages in order talk to

farmers and influence them to sell their milk. Dairy scientists conduct experiments to

determine the effects of different kinds of feeds and environmental conditions on the

quantity, quality and nutritive value of milk produced. They also conduct research in areas of

breeding, feeding and management of dairy cattle.

b) Processing involves handling milk for distribution, its conversion into dairy products. This

work normally begins after the milk has reached the plant. Here, milk is converted into a

variety of dairy products, such as cheese, chocolates, ice cream, butter ghee and so on.

Dairy Technologists deal with this aspect of the industry, and also work to further develop

improved methods in production, preservation and utilisation of milk, and milk products.

Dairy farming also engages services of dairy engineers, who are responsible for the setting

up and maintenance of dairy plants and related activities; and marketing personnel who

handle the marketing and sales of milk and milk products.

Employment Opportunities in Dairy Farming

Employment opportunities exist in both government and private sectors. The National Dairy

Development Board (NDDB), a multi-locational organisation involved in planning,

implementing, financing and supporting farmer-owned professional agri-business

enterprises is the core PSU in this field. However, with almost every state aping Amul’s

‘cooperative’ success, employment opportunities have increased manifold for technologists

and managers, both in production and marketing.

With the entry of multinational giants like Nestle, Cadburys, Britannia, Kellogg's, Heritage

Foods, KFC, HLL, etc. into the Indian market, employment opportunities as well as salaries

have received a further boost.

Traditional Indian market leaders like Mother Dairy, Indana, Milkfood, Amul, Dalmia, Dabur,

Cadburys, Vadilal, Parag, Vijaya and Milkfed (Verka) are also modernising and diversifying

their operations and exploring non-traditional channels to boost demand.

For young individuals looking at a career away from the hurly-burly of urban life, dairy

farming could be one of the most attractive choices available.

Dairy Farming Institutes & Training

Dairy farming colleges offer both degree and diploma dairy farming courses in India,

covering technology and management. Admissions into the four year courses are largely

merit-based; and some courses might last only two and a half years. Post graduation, a

Master’s degree course can be pursued in related agricultural fields, veterinary science,

engineering and food tech. You must clear the entrance exam for admission into these

courses as well.

Genetic research. The changes in the patent regime along with the initiatives

taken by the government are expected to bear fruit. All this will lead to a rapid

growth and expansion of BioTechnological industries in the country.

International Focus

At the international level, India has started making its presence felt in the domain

of BioTechnology. However, there is tremendous Scope for graduate and post-

graduate students from this field especially in the United States and in European

countries.A large number of post-graduate students and research scholars tend

to move out of India to complete their higher studies. Furthermore, these

students prefer to seek employment in the country where they complete their

studies or research projects.

Positives / Negatives

+ves:• This is an upcoming and constantly growing Bio Science and has

worldwide Scope especially in terms of research.• The Scope for research is very

wide and efficient work gets fast acclamation within multinationals.• If you

succeed in clearing the tests and interviews, it is assumed you are the right fit for

the Profession.-ves:• The number of seats for BioTechnology Courses is very

limited across colleges in comparison with subjects such as physics, chemistry or

Biology.• The testing and interviewing processes usually are difficult and one has

to be Technically expert. • The number of companies employing BioTechnology

students is less when compared with number of companies hiring IT

Professionals or finance Professionals.• You will have to put in a lot of hard work

which can be frustrating at times.• This is not a Profession for people who want to

make fast buck but for people who are looking for a long and a well charted

Career.

Different roles, different names

BioTechnology, as the name suggests is the Technology of Biology and the Scope

of both put together. On the one hand, it has concepts from Biology explored in

depth. On the other hand, this subject explores the impact and the influence of

Technology on the subject matter. The subject is quite similar to Bioinformatics,

which explores Biological information in depth using analytical and scientific tools.
